Visit and discover the Moroccan desert easily
Discover the desert, it seems immediately very complicated! We say that we must be very equipped to prepare it months in advance and it takes several weeks to get there. Good news: the desert of Merzouga in the south of Morocco is easily accessible: a few hours in 4 × 4 from Errachidia are enough to join me with magnificent dunes as far as the eye can see. One can easily and sleep: Tuareg local families built small camps in the dunes to welcome visitors (it is discreet and they blend well into the landscape).
The advantage of the Merzouga desert is that it is large enough to have the feeling of being in a great desert, without being excessive and as hostile as the Sahara … much more complicated to explore. What is incredible is that from France a stay of 4 days is enough to discover and sleep in the desert. Obviously I highly recommend you to spend at least a week in the region or integrate during a trip to Morocco.
Small village between the High Atlas and the city of Ouarzazate, Ait Benhaddou is mainly known for its Ksar. Different from the Kasbah, the Ksar is a group of houses in a pre-Saharan architectural style. The wall built around this complex offered security to its inhabitants and also strengthened the community link of the village. Inside the walls, the Ksar is composed of a mosque, a public square and a collective attic where cereals harvested during the year are stored. Visitors will be moved by the magnificence of the landscape and the calm that hovers. If they can, they will linger in the evening to watch the sunset or conversely, at dawn to marvel at the sunrise! Nowadays, the village is emancipated and the residences extend beyond the fortress. It is quite curious to observe the population living without running water or electricity, but whose happiness is not absent! A beautiful meditation for Westerners …
